Real Irish Music for your destination wedding – the Uilleann Pipes

Tommy Keane

One of our favorite Irish Uilleann Pipe players – Mr. Tommy Keane – getting ready to play for our clients wedding ceremony.

Many couples tell us that they would love to involve the Bagpipes in their wedding day. While we love the Bagpipes to ceremoniously announce the arrival or departure of the bride and groom they are not our first recommendation for the ceremony itself. Rather we love the Uilleann Pipes for this part of the day and here is why – 1. they actually are Irish 2. They have a much wider range and softer sound. Have a listen to Tommy at www.tommykeane.com
The facts:

The uilleann pipes  are the characteristic national bagpipe of Ireland. Earlier known in English as “union pipes”, their current name is a partial translation of the Irish-language term píobaí uilleann (literally, “pipes of the elbow”), from their method of inflation.

The uilleann pipes are distinguished from many other forms of bagpipes by their tone and wide range of notes – the chanter has a range of two full octaves, including sharps and flats. The uilleann pipes have a different harmonic structure, sounding sweeter and quieter than many other bagpipes, such as the Great Irish Warpipes, or the Great Highland Bagpipes . The uilleann pipes are often played indoors, and are almost always played sitting down.
